USPS tracking not updating: a practical enquiry workflow
Identify the last confirmed USPS or shipping-partner event, assemble the matching dispatch evidence and choose the appropriate inquiry or missing-mail route.

Open the exact number on official USPS tracking and save the event wording, date and location shown. Check the number against the active label first. A period without new scans does not explain which party last had the parcel.
For a shipping-partner event awaiting USPS, USPS says it does not yet hold the package and directs questions to the shipper. If postal handling is already recorded, investigate the later missing stage using that carrier history.
Build a packet that explains the physical parcel
Bring the order, active label and last handover record together. Include any replacement number and identify the team that approved it. For a China–US route, retain the international movement reference alongside the final postal number.
| Check | Record or next action |
|---|---|
| Carrier history | Latest exact event and its timestamp. |
| Dispatch evidence | Collection, drop-off or partner transfer record. |
| Parcel identity | Package type, contents description and relevant photographs. |
| Order link | Seller reference and any split or replacement shipment. |
Use the current inquiry or search process
The USPS Missing Mail page starts with checking tracking and sets out when a search can be submitted. It asks for sender and recipient addresses, mailing identifiers, container details and a description of the contents. Check its current timing instructions for the actual mailing.
Prepare that information before starting the appropriate request. A missing-mail search and an insurance claim have different purposes and requirements. Review the applicable claim process separately if the service includes eligible coverage.
Keep the investigation and buyer update connected
Assign an owner to the inquiry, save its reference and agree when that person will check for a response. Add new evidence to the history rather than replacing the earlier event. Escalate a documented mismatch with the handover team that can explain it.
Give the buyer the latest confirmed stage and the action under way. Avoid declaring loss or inventing a delivery date from elapsed time alone. If a seller case is active, follow its instructions while the transport inquiry continues.
